WHO ARE WE?
Shelby and Andre are both LA natives who met in grad school, where they were both evaluating their next career moves. Shelby was known for hosting the best end of quarter parties, and Andre was known for showing up to them way too early.
Shelby – 13 years in marketing and 34 years using plates. Shelby was obsessed with decorating and entertaining even in her first college apartment. She visited dozens of stores and websites trying to create the perfect dinnerware assortment on a small budget, and didn’t update her stuff until she built a wedding registry ten years later, which was also labor-intensive. She also needed PROPER PLATE CO.
Andre – 10 years in AdTech and 36 years using plates. Over the years he had built a miscellaneous collection of mismatched dishes left behind by roommates. It eventually got to the point where the dishes he owned did not match any other part of his life. His car and home signaled a working professional, but his dishes signaled fresh out of college. That is where the idea of PROPER PLATE CO. was born.
When it came time to form PROPER PLATE CO., the founders felt that dinnerware was about more than just bowls and cups, and they knew they wanted their company to be about more, too.
Achieving a “proper plate” doesn’t refer just to a dish. Sometimes it’s about presentation. It’s about having the right dinnerware to show off your latest food creation. Or maybe plating your take-out and eating at the dining table instead of in front of the TV. It’s about taking a pause, enjoying the moment, spending time with your people and sharing a meal whether it’s a special occasion, or just another Monday night dinner.
Sometimes a “proper plate” is about getting three nourishing meals a day—something not everyone is able to do. 1% of our profits will go toward fighting hunger and food insecurity, turning proper plates into proper meals with each purchase.
Finally, you can’t have a “proper plate” if it’s harming our planet. PROPER PLATE CO. commits to using sustainable materials or working with sustainability-focused partners whenever possible, and by creating products that will last for years.
That’s why dinner tastes better on proper plates.
